Rescue teams still searching for huge blue whale tangled in fishing line off California coast

Search crews have reported no signs of a blue whale that was entangled in fishing line off the southern California coast and last seen Friday night.

The search resumed Monday for the massive mammal that was dragging several hundred feet of line. Rescuers searched for the whale on Saturday and Sunday, hoping to disentangle it from the heavy line, but to no avail.

Though the whale was estimated at 80 feet long, rescuers fear the stress and strain could weaken and eventually kill the whale.

A Facebook post Monday morning by the Los Angeles chapter of the American Cetacean Society indicated that the whale had been spotted off the coast of Mexico's Coronados Islands. The region southwest of Tijuana is some 150 miles from where the whale had been initially seen in distress by boaters on a whale watching expedition. Read more...
