Russian 'selfie soldiers' are posting photos from war-torn Syria

They have posted dozens of images of themselves on the blood-stained battlefields of eastern Ukraine, standing proudly atop tanks with Kalashnikov rifles in hand, operating surface-to-air missile launchers and posturing with other camouflage-clad fighters near the destroyed Donetsk airport.

Now, Russia's so-called "selfie soldiers" are uploading photos of themselves in war-torn Syria, where they are supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's ailing regime.

From space, Baltic Sea 'dead zone' is an ethereal blue-green whirlpool

Never has a "dead zone" looked so beautiful.

An Earth-gazing satellite captured colorful images of possibly toxic algae blooms swirling in the Baltic Sea in early August. The bloom has helped to create a "dead zone," which is an area of oxygen poor waters that can prove deadly to marine life

In one of the photos taken in August but released in September, a ship cuts through the green blooms, leaving a path as it makes its way across the troubled body of water

"Warm weather and calm seas this August have increased the amount of biological activity in the central Baltic Sea, with the Finnish algae monitoring service Alg@line reporting a dominance of cyanobacteria in the region at this time," the European Space Agency (ESA) said in a statement about the new photos. NEW YORK — In a packed auditorium at Industria Superstudio on Tuesday morning, Zac Posen showcased his Zac by Zac Posen diffusion line as the first major show to kick off New York Fashion Week. Posen's final look was unlike anything in any of his past shows — and it dazzled the runway. The one-of-a-kind LED gown literally lit up the catwalk, with lights sparkling under its sheath.

The success story of Dooce.com was once blogger lore, told and re-told in playgroups and Meetups — anywhere hyper-verbal people with Wordpress accounts gathered. "It happened for that Dooce lady," they would say. "It could happen for your blog, too."

Dooce began in the late 1990s, when a young lapsed Mormon named Heather Armstrong taught herself HTML code and moved to Los Angeles. She got a job in web design and began blogging about her life on her personal site, Dooce.com.

The site's name evolved out of her friends' AOL Instant-Messenger slang for dude, or its more incredulous cousin, "doooood!" About a year later, Armstrong was fired for writing about her co-workers on the site — an experience that, for a good portion of the 'oughts, came known as "getting dooced." Kentucky clerk who refused same-sex marriage licenses is getting out of jail

Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who was jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, will be released on Tuesday after five days behind bars.

Though she'll be free, a judge ordered Davis not to "interfere in any way, directly or indirectly, with the efforts of her deputy clerks to issue marriage licenses to all legally eligible couples."

Lufthansa cancels 1,000 flights due to pilot strike

German airline Lufthansa is canceling 1,000 flights on Wednesday because of a pilot strike.

Some 140,000 travelers will be affected by the grounding, the airline said Tuesday.

"Lufthansa deeply regrets the resulting inconvenience to its customers," it said.

The pilots union, Vereinigung Cockpit, began its strike on long-haul flights Tuesday, forcing the cancellation of 90 flights. On Wednesday it is extending the strike to include medium- and short-haul flights.

Researcher claims to hack self-driving car sensors with simple laser

The self-driving car era isn't yet upon us, but security research is well underway.

Jonathan Petit, a Principal Scientist at Security Innovation, will present a paper detailing how to spoof Lidar sensors used in self-driving cars at the Black Hat Europe security conference in November, reports IEEE Spectrum. Petit claims that he can "trick" a self-driving car into seeing objects that aren't actually there using a low-power laser and a pulse generator.

Lidar — short for Light Detection and Ranging — is a radar-like system that uses pulsed lasers to create a 3D image of the world. In some self-driving cars, Lidar is essentially the eyes of the car. Read more...
