Cruises have been corny since at least 1910

The idea of taking a cruise purely for pleasure was unheard of prior to the late 19th century. People took to ocean liners solely as a means of reaching a destination.

With the advent of steam ships and the growth of travel between Europe and America, shipping companies competed to build faster, larger, more luxurious vessels.

It was a lucrative business, but it was not year-round — transit across the north Atlantic was risky and sometimes suspended during the stormy winter months

Alberto Ballin, director of the Hamburg-America Line, decided to put his idle ships to use. In January 1891 he sent 241 passengers aboard the Augusta Victoria on a tour of Mediterranean destinations including Alexandria, Beirut and Constantinople. Read more...
